Every millimetre of scale on boiler heat transfer surfaces adds 7–10% to fuel consumption. A 3 mm deposit can raise energy costs by over 25% — silently and continuously. Biofilm on cooling tower heat exchangers reduces heat transfer efficiency by up to 40%. Legionella growth in fouled towers creates serious health and legal compliance liability. RO membranes without antiscalant protection foul within weeks, slashing water recovery and cutting the expected 5–7 year membrane service life to under 2 years. Corrosion-induced tube failures, contamination events and membrane replacements each cost far more than a complete annual water treatment program. Prevention always wins. ### Know Your Water Numbers Before You Call Us Nine free calculators for scaling & corrosion tendency, RO membrane performance, cycles of concentration and cost exposure — enter your own readings and get a personalised, branded PDF report in seconds. - **Scaling & Corrosion Risk**: LSI, RSI and Puckorius indices calculated instantly from your water chemistry readings. - **RO & Membrane Health**: Salt rejection, recovery and SDI fouling risk for your reverse osmosis system. - **Cost & Blowdown Exposure**: Estimate the annual fuel and water cost of running your system untreated. - **Free PDF Report**: Every result explained and ranked by urgency — downloaded or emailed to you instantly. Right-sized dosing and monitoring reduce chemical consumption without compromising protection. ### On Site With Our Clients A look at recent plant work by the Kranti Water technical team. Company names are withheld for client confidentiality. #### Foaming & Pump Choking in a Bromine Column Challenge Bottom foaming and pump choking with the anti-foam chemistry previously in use, plus a need to confirm the product was safe for the bromine column and finished product. What we did Supplied three options for the client's own plant testing, shared MSDS and COA for review with the column manufacturer, and set a high-water-content formulation to prevent pump choking. When supply starts, our engineer stays on site for the first 24 hours to set and monitor dosing, with monthly site visits proposed for ongoing quality checks. #### Low pH Across Five Drinking Water RO Systems A plant review requested by the client's team found low pH in the RO water across its five drinking water RO systems. Our technical head inspected all systems on site, supplied a dosing pump and started RO pH booster dosing, and proposed an automatic pH controller for consistent control. #### Scale & Algae in a Pharma Cooling Tower Scale deposits and algae growth in the cooling tower. Site meeting and tower inspection by our technical team, followed by a cooling tower treatment program targeting scale and algae, dispatched to site. #### Multi-Tower Trial with Baseline Data Show measurable treatment performance against the plant's own historical water data. Started a trial on three cooling towers, after first collecting the plant's previous make-up, circulating and boiler water analysis (pH, TDS, hardness, chloride, phosphate) as the baseline to measure results against. ### What Our Clients Say Feedback from operations and utility teams we support. Illustrative scenarios — composite examples based on typical program outcomes for the water chemistry and equipment types described, not a report of a specific named client engagement. Actual results depend on your system's current condition and water chemistry; ask us for a site-specific estimate. Medium-pressure fire-tube boiler · High feed-water hardness · SYS.01 Boiler A textile processing unit running a medium-pressure fire-tube boiler on hard, high-alkalinity makeup water was seeing visible scale buildup on tubes within a few months, along with rising fuel bills and a manual descaling routine every shutdown. A threshold scale inhibitor and oxygen-scavenger dosing program was designed around the feed-water hardness and alkalinity profile, with weekly TDS and sulphite residual checks to keep dosing on target. Boilers in this condition typically move out of the 7–10% fuel-loss-per-mm-of-scale range described in our water-cost data within one to two dosing cycles, with tubes staying visibly clean between annual shutdowns. Cooling Tower Program — Automotive Component Manufacturer Induced-draft cooling tower · Biofilm & Legionella risk · SYS.02 Cooling Tower An automotive component plant's cooling tower was showing reduced heat-exchanger efficiency and biofilm growth in the fill pack, raising both energy cost and Legionella compliance risk during warmer months. An integrated corrosion-inhibitor, biocide and bio-dispersant program was set around the cycles of concentration and metallurgy, with monthly biological monitoring added to the AMC schedule. Towers with comparable fouling typically recover a meaningful share of the up-to-40% heat-transfer efficiency loss biofilm causes, while bringing biological counts back within a compliance-ready range. Multi-stage RO skid · High silica feed water · SYS.03 Reverse Osmosis A food and beverage facility's RO plant was fouling within weeks of each membrane change, driven by elevated silica in the feed water — cutting recovery and pushing membrane life well under the expected 5–7 years. A high-performance polymer antiscalant formulated for elevated silica was dosed at the feed line, paired with a scheduled CIP cleaning cycle to restore flux between services. Systems with this fouling pattern typically see membrane service life trend back toward the 5–7 year range once antiscalant dosing is matched correctly to feed-water silica levels. #### Want a scenario specific to your plant? Send us your water analysis or request a free sample audit and we'll model what a program could realistically achieve for your system. --- ## Free LSI, SDI & RO Recovery Calculators | Kranti Water Source: https://krantiwater.com/water-calculators.html ### Water Treatment Calculators Seven calculators for the numbers plant and lab teams work out by hand every week — scaling & corrosion tendency, cycles of concentration, RO performance, SDI, unit conversions and dosing. Free to use, no signup, runs entirely in your browser. LSI & RSI Index Scaling / corrosion tendency Cycles & Blowdown Boiler / cooling tower RO Recovery & Rejection Membrane performance SDI Calculator RO feed fouling potential Blowdown Cost Loss ₹ saving from higher cycles Tower Water Savings ₹ saving from higher cycles TDS ⇄ Conductivity Unit conversion Hardness Converter ppm / °dH / °fH / gpg Dosing & Dilution Feed rate / mixing ratio Free PDF Report All your results, branded ### Langelier (LSI) & Ryznar (RSI) Index Estimates whether water will tend to precipitate scale (positive LSI) or dissolve protective carbonate films and corrode metal (negative LSI). The Ryznar index is calculated alongside as a cross-check. Used for boiler, cooling tower and general process water. LSI > 0: scale-forming. LSI ≈ 0: balanced. LSI < 0: corrosive. RSI 5–7 is balanced, below 5.5 heavy scale, above 7 corrosive. Screening estimate only — ask us for a lab-verified analysis . ### Cycles of Concentration & Blowdown Works out how many times dissolved solids are concentrating in your system, and how much blowdown you need to hold a target cycle before scale or corrosion risk builds up. Boiler drum pressure (auto-fills typical TDS limit) — Set TDS limit manually — Up to 20 bar / 300 psig — 3500 ppm 21–31 bar / 301–450 psig — 3000 ppm 32–41 bar / 451–600 psig — 2500 ppm 42–52 bar / 601–750 psig — 1000 ppm 53–62 bar / 751–900 psig — 750 ppm 63–69 bar / 901–1000 psig — 625 ppm Cooling tower evaporation is estimated from recirculation rate and cooling range using E ≈ 0.00153 × R × ΔT (°C) — an industry rule of thumb; actual evaporation varies with humidity and wet-bulb temperature. Drift losses are not included. ### RO System Recovery & Salt Rejection Checks whether your RO skid is running at a healthy recovery ratio and whether membranes are still rejecting salts effectively — a quick way to spot fouling or scaling before flux drops. Typical brackish-water RO runs 50–85% recovery with 95–99.5% rejection. Falling rejection at stable pressure usually means membrane fouling or scaling — see our RO treatment program . ### Silt Density Index (SDI₁₅) Turns your 0.45-micron filter timer readings into an SDI value that tells you whether RO feed water is safe to run or needs better pretreatment. Standard ASTM D4189 procedure at 30 psi (2.1 bar). Most membrane manufacturers want SDI₁₅ < 5 to run RO safely, and < 3 for a comfortable fouling margin. Consistently high SDI points to a pretreatment gap — ask us to review your pretreatment train . ### TDS ⇄ Conductivity Converter Handheld meters read either conductivity (µS/cm) or TDS (ppm) — this converts between them using an adjustable conversion factor, since the exact ratio depends on your water's ion mix. TDS (ppm) ≈ Conductivity (µS/cm) × factor. Use 0.5 for near-pure NaCl water, up to 0.8 for water rich in sulphate/carbonate. For precise dosing decisions, use a lab TDS/gravimetric reading. ### Water Hardness Unit Converter Converts hardness between the units different labs, imported equipment and older reports use — ppm as CaCO₃, German degrees, French degrees and grains per US gallon. Input unit ppm / mg/L as CaCO₃ °dH (German degrees) °fH (French degrees) Grains per US gallon (gpg) ### Chemical Dosing & Dilution Calculator Two everyday calculations: how much product to add to hit a target dose, and how to dilute a concentrate down to a working strength. A starting-point calculation for planning and pump calibration — always confirm dosing against your program's trial results and local water chemistry. Ask our technical team to help set up your dosing program. ### Boiler Blowdown Heat & Cost Loss Every litre blown down is hot, treated water going to drain — and fuel burned to reheat its replacement. This puts a rupee figure on your current blowdown rate and shows what you would save by raising cycles of concentration. Heat retained in blowdown (% of steam energy value — typically 12–25%, rises with pressure) Blowdown leaves the boiler at saturation temperature, so it carries away both treated water and heat. The heat component uses the percentage you set above — at ~10 bar, blowdown liquid holds roughly 20–25% of the energy that went into making the same mass of steam, less if you have a blowdown heat recovery exchanger. Planning-level estimate, not a guaranteed saving. ### Cooling Tower Water Savings from Higher Cycles Running a tower at higher cycles of concentration cuts blowdown and makeup water directly. This shows how much water and money you would save moving from your current cycles to a target — the core business case for a proper inhibitor program. Higher cycles are only safe if scale and corrosion are chemically controlled — pushing cycles without an inhibitor program trades water savings for scale and tube damage. Check your LSI/RSI before raising cycles. ### Get your Water System Health Report Turn the readings above into a dated, branded PDF you can file, share with your maintenance head, or attach to a capex note. Price per kilogram matters far less than these four things, because poorly matched chemistry costs more in fuel, water, membranes and downtime than the chemical itself. ### Who supplies water treatment chemicals in India? Industrial plants in India buy water treatment chemicals from three broad types of supplier: - Multinational water treatment companies with national service networks and proprietary chemistries, typically suited to large integrated sites with a central procurement contract. - Indian manufacturers with in-house technical service , who formulate their own boiler, cooling tower, RO and ETP/STP products and send chemists to the plant. Kranti Water (Vadodara, Gujarat) is in this group. - Traders and distributors , who resell generic products. They can be economical for simple needs but usually provide little water analysis or on-site support. Any of the three can be the right fit. The checklist below works for comparing all of them on equal terms. ### The 10-point supplier checklist ### Red flags - A product and dose quoted before anyone has seen your water analysis. - One "universal" chemical offered for boilers, cooling towers and RO alike. - No SDS or COA, or a COA that never changes from batch to batch. - Results promised without any baseline measurement to compare against. - No one available to visit the plant when foaming, scaling or a pH swing occurs. ### What to ask for in a proposal #### Boilers Feedwater and boiler water analysis, scale and corrosion inhibitor chemistry, oxygen scavenger type and residual target, condensate treatment, TDS limit for blowdown at your operating pressure. See boiler water treatment . #### Cooling towers Target cycles of concentration, LSI or Puckorius index at operating temperature, inhibitor residual, biocide rotation and microbial monitoring plan, Legionella control. See cooling tower treatment . #### RO plants Antiscalant chemistry matched to feed silica, iron and TDS, projected recovery, CIP cleaning chemicals and frequency, membrane-compatible biocide. See RO and membrane treatment . ### Check your own numbers first Before talking to any supplier, run your water analysis through the free water treatment calculators (LSI, RSI, cycles of concentration, blowdown, RO recovery, SDI and more). Knowing your scaling tendency and cycles yourself makes it much easier to judge whether a proposal is realistic. ### About Kranti Water Kranti Water is an ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer and supplier of industrial water treatment chemicals, based in Vadodara, Gujarat, India, and the water treatment division of Kranti Chemicals . In practice, five or six parameters do most of the work of telling you whether your program is on target. Here's what to look at first, and what an out-of-range number usually means. ### Feed water vs. boiler water vs. condensate Most reports test three separate samples, and it's worth knowing why: feed water shows what's going into the boiler, boiler water shows what's concentrating inside it, and condensate shows whether anything is coming back corroded or contaminated. A problem that only shows up in one of the three tells you where to look. ### The parameters that matter most #### Total Hardness (as CaCO₃) Hardness in feed water is the single biggest predictor of scale risk. Softened feed water should read close to zero; anything meaningfully above that means your softener needs attention before it means your chemical dosing does. #### Alkalinity (P and M alkalinity) Alkalinity affects both scale formation and the risk of caustic embrittlement at higher pressures. It's read alongside pH — a boiler running high alkalinity and high pH needs a different chemical strategy than one running near-neutral. #### TDS / Conductivity This is your blowdown control number. As TDS climbs toward the ceiling set for your operating pressure, blowdown rate needs to increase — otherwise you risk carryover and scale-forming salts depositing on tube surfaces. #### Silica Silica scale is harder to remove than calcium scale and insulates heat transfer surfaces badly even in thin layers. High-pressure boilers in particular need silica tracked closely against their TDS limit. #### Sulphite Residual (or other oxygen scavenger residual) This confirms your oxygen scavenger is dosed correctly. Too low, and dissolved oxygen is free to pit the boiler and condensate lines; too high wastes chemical and can affect steam purity. Boiler water pH is normally kept in an alkaline range to minimise corrosion, but the right target depends on your metallurgy and pressure — this is usually set specifically for your system rather than taken from a generic chart. ### What to do when a number is out of range - Hardness creeping up: Check the softener regeneration cycle before adjusting chemical dosage. - TDS trending high: Increase blowdown rate, and confirm the blowdown control system is actually responding to your conductivity setpoint. - Sulphite residual low or erratic: Check dosing pump calibration and injection point — a common cause is a pump losing prime, not an underdosed program. - Silica rising toward the limit: Reduce cycles of concentration via increased blowdown, since silica doesn't respond to chemical treatment the way calcium scale does. ### The bottom line A water analysis report is only useful if someone is actually acting on the trend, not just the single reading. That's why an ongoing program includes regular testing and a written interpretation — not just a one-time lab result. #### Want your boiler report interpreted by our technical team? A Practical Guide for Plant Operators If you've ever looked at a water analysis report, TDS is usually the first number your eye goes to — and for good reason. Total Dissolved Solids is one of the simplest ways to judge how "loaded" your water is, and it drives decisions across boilers, cooling towers and RO systems every single day. Here's what it actually means and how to use it. ### What TDS actually measures Total Dissolved Solids is the combined weight of everything dissolved in your water that isn't water itself — calcium and magnesium salts, sodium, chlorides, sulphates, silica, bicarbonates and more. It's reported in parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per litre (mg/L), and in the field it's usually estimated from a conductivity reading rather than measured directly, since dissolved ions conduct electricity in rough proportion to their concentration. TDS doesn't tell you which minerals are present — two samples with identical TDS can behave completely differently depending on whether that load is mostly calcium hardness or mostly sodium chloride. That's why a full water analysis looks at TDS alongside hardness, alkalinity, chlorides and silica rather than TDS alone. ### Why TDS matters for each system #### Boilers As boiler water evaporates into steam, dissolved solids left behind concentrate in the remaining water. Once TDS climbs too high, you get carryover, foaming, and scale-forming salts crystallising onto tube surfaces. Blowdown rate is set largely around keeping boiler TDS under a safe ceiling for the operating pressure. #### Cooling towers Cooling towers concentrate TDS the same way through evaporation. The ratio of TDS in the tower versus the makeup water is called cycles of concentration — a key number for sizing your scale and corrosion inhibitor program correctly. #### RO systems Feed water TDS is one of the first numbers used to size an RO system and select antiscalant chemistry, since higher TDS generally means a higher risk of scale forming on the membrane surface as water is forced through it. ### What your number is telling you - Low TDS (under ~150 ppm): Generally low scaling risk, but can be more corrosive since it has less buffering capacity — corrosion control still matters. - Moderate TDS (150–500 ppm): Typical municipal or borewell supply in much of India — workable for most systems with a standard treatment program. - High TDS (500+ ppm): Needs closer attention to scale inhibitor dosing, cycles of concentration, and — for RO — antiscalant chemistry matched to the specific ions present. ### The bottom line TDS is a fast, useful screening number — but it's a starting point, not the whole picture. The right treatment program is built from a full parameter set (hardness, alkalinity, chlorides, silica, iron, conductivity) interpreted together, which is exactly what a proper water analysis report is for. #### Not sure what your TDS number means for your system? Here are the five signs worth acting on before it gets there. ### 1. Visible slime on the fill pack or basin A biofilm layer feels slippery to the touch and often has a dull, slightly discoloured sheen. It usually shows up first in low-flow areas — basin corners, distribution deck edges, the underside of fill pack sheets — well before it's visible from a casual walk-by. ### 2. Unexplained drop in heat transfer efficiency Biofilm insulates heat exchanger surfaces almost as effectively as mineral scale does. If approach temperature is creeping up and your scale inhibitor program looks fine on paper, biological fouling is one of the first things worth ruling out. ### 3. Musty or sulphurous odour near the tower Certain bacteria common in poorly controlled cooling systems produce compounds with a distinctly unpleasant smell as a metabolic byproduct. An odour that wasn't there before is a reliable early signal, often showing up before slime is visible anywhere. ### 4. Localised corrosion or pitting under deposits Biofilm creates oxygen-depleted pockets against metal surfaces, which is exactly the environment that drives microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). Pitting that shows up under a deposit, rather than spread evenly across a surface, is a classic MIC pattern. ### 5. Rising bacterial counts on routine testing This is the one that shouldn't be optional. Regular dip-slide or lab testing for total bacteria count — and specifically for Legionella in systems with cooling tower drift exposure — is the only way to catch fouling before it becomes visible or starts affecting compliance. ### What to do next A single high reading doesn't always mean a system failure — it can mean a biocide feed pump losing prime, a recent shock-dose that wasn't followed through, or a seasonal shift in makeup water quality. The fix is usually a properly sequenced oxidising and non-oxidising biocide program with a bio-dispersant to break up existing biofilm, not just a higher dose of whatever's already being fed. #### Seeing any of these signs on your tower?
