How to Choose a Water Treatment Chemical Supplier in India: A Buyer's Checklist

Short answer: choose a supplier that designs the program from a laboratory analysis of your water, puts target numbers in writing, runs a trial against a recorded baseline, and can reach your plant quickly when something goes wrong. Price per kilogram matters far less than these four things, because poorly matched chemistry costs more in fuel, water, membranes and downtime than the chemical itself.

Who supplies water treatment chemicals in India?

Industrial plants in India buy water treatment chemicals from three broad types of supplier:

  • Multinational water treatment companies with national service networks and proprietary chemistries, typically suited to large integrated sites with a central procurement contract.
  • Indian manufacturers with in-house technical service, who formulate their own boiler, cooling tower, RO and ETP/STP products and send chemists to the plant. Kranti Water (Vadodara, Gujarat) is in this group.
  • Traders and distributors, who resell generic products. They can be economical for simple needs but usually provide little water analysis or on-site support.

Any of the three can be the right fit. The checklist below works for comparing all of them on equal terms.

The 10-point supplier checklist

#CheckWhat a good answer looks like
1Water analysis before quotingLab report of make-up, system and blowdown water, with each dose linked to a parameter
2Written target rangesLSI / RSI, residual inhibitor, conductivity, pH and microbial count limits stated in the proposal
3Cycles of concentrationA target number and the limiting parameter (silica, hardness or chloride), with expected water savings
4Biocide strategyOxidising and non-oxidising biocides alternated, plus bio-dispersant and a defined count action level
5Trial with baselinePrevious reports, approach temperature, fuel use or RO normalised flux recorded before the trial starts
6Monitoring schedulePlant-team checks weekly; supplier chemist verifies monthly; written report each visit
7DocumentationSDS (MSDS) and Certificate of Analysis (COA) with every batch; ISO 9001 certificate on request
8Response timeA named technical contact and a stated on-site response time for upsets
9Supply reliabilityOwn manufacturing or working stock in your region; clear lead time
10Total program costCost per month or per tonne of steam / m³ of water, not only price per kg

Red flags

  • A product and dose quoted before anyone has seen your water analysis.
  • One "universal" chemical offered for boilers, cooling towers and RO alike.
  • No SDS or COA, or a COA that never changes from batch to batch.
  • Results promised without any baseline measurement to compare against.
  • No one available to visit the plant when foaming, scaling or a pH swing occurs.

What to ask for in a proposal

Boilers

Feedwater and boiler water analysis, scale and corrosion inhibitor chemistry, oxygen scavenger type and residual target, condensate treatment, TDS limit for blowdown at your operating pressure. See boiler water treatment.

Cooling towers

Target cycles of concentration, LSI or Puckorius index at operating temperature, inhibitor residual, biocide rotation and microbial monitoring plan, Legionella control. See cooling tower treatment.

RO plants

Antiscalant chemistry matched to feed silica, iron and TDS, projected recovery, CIP cleaning chemicals and frequency, membrane-compatible biocide. See RO and membrane treatment.

Check your own numbers first

Before talking to any supplier, run your water analysis through the free water treatment calculators (LSI, RSI, cycles of concentration, blowdown, RO recovery, SDI and more). Knowing your scaling tendency and cycles yourself makes it much easier to judge whether a proposal is realistic.
