Seawater & High-Salinity Water Treatment

Seawater is the hardest water any plant has to treat: extreme salinity, aggressive chloride and constant marine fouling. Alongside our programmes for fresh and borewell water, we design and support treatment for seawater cooling towers, once-through seawater cooling, SWRO desalination and brine streams — for plants along India's bromine and salt coast.

Why it is difficult

Why Seawater Is the Hardest Water to Treat

Seawater carries around 35,000 mg/L of dissolved salts, compared with a few hundred mg/L in typical river or municipal water. Every problem a freshwater system has, seawater has faster and harder.

Extreme Salinity

Around 35,000 mg/L of dissolved salts — high in calcium, magnesium and sulphate — so scale forms fast as water heats or concentrates.

Chloride Corrosion

Roughly 19,000 mg/L of chloride attacks carbon steel, pits stainless steel and stresses copper-alloy condenser tubes.

Marine Biofouling

Slime, barnacles and mussels colonise intakes, screens and heat exchangers within weeks if left untreated.

Little Room for Error

Seawater towers run at low cycles and SWRO at 55–70 bar — small dosing mistakes quickly become big losses.

Systems we treat

Seawater Systems We Treat

Products shown are what we typically select from our range. Grades and dosages are confirmed after your seawater analysis.

Seawater Cooling Towers

The challenge
Very high salt load and low cycles of concentration — often below 2 — so blowdown volumes and chemical economics both matter.
Our approach
Scale and metal-protection chemistry selected for high-sulphate seawater, an alternating biocide programme and bio-dispersant to keep fill clean.

Tower antiscalant Bacteria & algae biocide Broad-spectrum biocide Bio-dispersant

Once-Through Seawater Cooling

The challenge
Intakes, screens, condensers and plate heat exchangers fed directly from the sea — the front line for marine fouling.
Our approach
Biofouling control at the intake and exchanger, with monitoring of approach temperature and pressure drop to catch fouling early.

Brine & Bittern Streams

The challenge
Bromine, salt and chemical works handling concentrated brines — the most scaling- and corrosion-prone water in industry.
Our approach
Programmes designed around your brine chemistry, with process-side support for issues such as foaming in columns.

How we work

How We Run a Seawater Programme

  1. Full seawater analysisTDS, chloride, sulphate, calcium, magnesium, silica, boron, SDI and microbial counts — from intake and from the system.
  2. Metallurgy & system reviewMaterials of construction, operating temperatures, cycles or RO recovery, and current fouling history.
  3. Programme with target rangesProducts, dosages and the limits we will hold — inhibitor residual, counts, approach temperature or normalised flux — in writing.
  4. Trial against a baselineYour previous data is recorded first so the trial result can be measured, not guessed.
  5. Monitoring & reviewRegular site checks, monthly water quality logs and dosing adjusted as seawater changes with the season.

Questions

Seawater Treatment FAQ

Can Kranti Water treat seawater cooling towers?

Yes. We design seawater cooling tower programmes covering scale control, metal protection, an alternating biocide schedule and bio-dispersant, set after a full analysis of your seawater and system.

What cycles of concentration are realistic with seawater?

Much lower than with fresh water — seawater towers typically run below 2 cycles because calcium sulphate and carbonate scaling limits are reached quickly. We set the target from your own seawater analysis.

Do you supply chemicals for seawater RO (SWRO) plants?

Yes — RO antiscalants, acidic and alkaline CIP cleaners and membrane-compatible biocide. The antiscalant grade is chosen from your feed analysis and recovery.

How do you control marine biofouling?

With a planned biocide programme — alternating chemistries so organisms do not adapt — plus bio-dispersant to break biofilm, and monitoring of heat exchanger performance to catch fouling early.

Seawater Is One Part of Our Work

Most plants we support run on fresh, borewell or municipal water. The same team, analysis and programmes cover every water source.

Send Us a Seawater Sample

Share your seawater or brine analysis — or ask us to collect a sample. We'll recommend a programme with target ranges and dosages within 48 hours.
